Data Governance ensures the quality, integrity, security, and usability of all data collected by a given organization. When tasked with maintaining or accessing organizational information, the rules of that institution, in addition to federal laws and regulations, must be considered. The stronger data governance practices implemented at an institution, the more trust customers have in the data itself, as well as the systems in place that store their data. Data governance is foundational to data security, data quality, data ownership, and other data management practices that hinge on the trustworthiness of information. UAIR’s current efforts in developing a data governance policy that reflects regulatory standards, federal laws, and organizationally specific rules will support the innovation and accessibility of data tools and services at the University of Arizona. Additionally, a core aspect of implementing effective data governance practices at an institution is data transparency. UAIR's release of the Institutional Data Dictionary aims to increase user access to trustworthy information about the university.
