Student success is measured in many ways. As the student landscape within higher education continues to shift, the campus community continues to adapt and innovate our approaches to student success.  The Fall Student Census at the University of Arizona is one of the most important services UAIR provides to the university since the data it provides helps university decision-making and will be referenced for years to come. These snapshots help the institution track and record information about the student population, including enrollment counts, graduation and retention rates, demographic information, student origin, as well as other crucial datasets. Student census information is captured through data snapshots, which represent point-in-time data (at a consistent frequency), so that institutional metrics can be analyzed for year-to-year comparisons. This year’s Student Census snapshot took place on September 16, 2024, and captured all transactional activity up until September 15, 2024.

The university welcomed a historic incoming first-year undergraduate class of 9,314 students, and with a record number of Arizona residents as part of that incoming cohort, the university saw an overall enrollment of 56,544 students this fall.

Programs like Arizona Road Trip have been instrumental in connecting with students across the state, and we’re thrilled to see more students from all corners of Arizona choosing the University of Arizona – Kasey Urquídez, Chief Enrollment Officer, Vice President of Enrollment Management, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

Student Census snapshot data also allow us point-in-time comparisons for retention and graduation rates that help campus leaders make data-informed decisions around student success and retention. U of A calculates official retention and graduation rates using the first-time full-time undergraduate fall cohort and graduation rate cycles include ever degree awarded prior to the fall census date of the following year.

The census process is an ongoing effort that continues to evolve to meet reporting requirements and campus needs and would not be possible without the collaboration and dedication of the campus units who work to organize and execute the Student Census Report each and every year.
