Description:
Corn and Manihot hilled up - most planting here is done in this way. [Shantz travel journal, Feb. 15, 1920] The great hill country has a rather sandy soil. Manihot and corn are grown on high beds 1 to 2 ft. high. The native hoe - about the same everywhere - consists of a wood handle and an iron shovel pushed through the knot at the end. Work is mostly done by the women. [Shantz travel journal, Feb. 17, 1920]
