Ripe corn, rice

Description:
This photo shows one of the characteristic things about their agriculture. Old crop of corn shown in fore, manihot, rice harvested, and bananas. Forest behind with undergrowth of manihot and mallow fiber plant. The [rice] heads are stripped off - and the straw trampled down. Corn is harvested also by pulling off the ears, and consequently the old stems stand in the rice fields. Apparently the corn comes off before rice heads. One thing is noticeable - I see no straight head of rice - or any smut or disease of corn. Bananas represent the perennial crop - also manihot, and corn and rice annual crops. In this way - the large forest trees - two perennial crops and two annual crops are grown together - apparently they are not troubled with weeds. Their tobacco is not crowded with other plants but is given clear cultivation - and grown in the open for the most part. [Shantz travel journal, Jan. 25, 1920]
