Soil cut down

Contributor:

Description:
Shows soil cut down to form RR grade. Occasionally there is a column left standing - possibly as a measure of the amount removed. All cuts are like this - very sharp and angular. Grass cover in the back. This cut is about 6 ft. deep to perhaps 3 in shallowest place. Soil below looks like rock, but is a red rather hard clay like mass. Rock shapes are shown in it - apparently most of soil formed in situ. [Shantz travel journal, Jan. 8, 1920]
